Cardijn quote

Every young worker is worth more than all the gold in the world.

Cardijn on adult apostolate

"The fact that apostolic movements up to the present day are principally being put into action by young people does not lessen the importance of, and the urgent need for an apostolate amongs adults; unless such an apostolate exists, all the efforts of the young people will lead to a dead end" - Laymen into action

May Day 2009 Message

May Day is a time to pay tribute to all our predecessors who struggled to better our living and working conditions. It is also an occasion to feel jubilant about our victory in achieving 8 hour work day. When we look at the reality, Globalization is doing away with the rights and privileges won by the working class after years of struggle. Not only men but even women are working for more than 12 hours and in many cases round the clock. The social life of the workers, particularly the young workers has undergone a paradigm shift, leaving them isolated and worn out.

In the name of an unprecedented economic crisis, the workers and their families are pushed to the brim of society. In their quest for more profit and dominance, the big industries, MNCs, banks, corporate bosses and other employers deployed modern technology with an aim to replace the workers. The workers were redeployed, rendered redundant and retrenched. Protecting the job became the basic demand for the working class than to demand better living and working conditions.

The world is now facing a worst economic melt down since 1929. Wage cuts, job cuts, retrenchments, lay off, etc. are forced on the workers as if they are responsible for this crisis. Unemployment figures shoot upwards in many countries. Social security measures are withdrawn. On the other hand the number of workers in the informal/unorganized sector is rapidly increasing with no social security at all.

Governments are pumping in trillions of dollars as stimulus packages to redeem the economy which benefits only the top echelon and not the workers.

We are able to clearly draw a lesson from this. The system they are trying to promote at the cost of the working class and human dignity has miserably failed. Thus, there is an urgent need for an alternative system.

On this May Day 2009, CCI calls upon all worker organizations, NGOs, youth and student movements, the Church, religious and all other civil society organizations to work together to build a better world based on humanistic values. An extract from the May Day message from another Cardijn movement, i.e. the World Movement of Christian Workers (MMTC) sums up our expectation:

“Nourished by our faith in Jesus Christ, we want to contribute to the establishment of a new society, where all workers who are members of the one race, ‘The Human Race’ work together to create an alternative world based on practicing solidarity to build peace and respect for human dignity and the human rights of all”.

2010 - a year of hope

posted 30 Dec 2009 16:50 by CCI Media

2009 has been a year of ups and downs for all of us. The world faced a terrible financial crunch which affected each and every one, particularly the less fortunate and the under privileged. Concerns were expressed at the global level at the ecological degradation but nothing concrete emerges in terms of practicing what the 'big bosses' preach. For us in CCI, it was also a year of loss of many of our members and friends of Cardijn movements. 2009 was also a year of growth for CCI.

Let us hope that 2010 will be a year of hope, reconciliation, renewal and a step towards a better future for humanity. We, at the Internaitonal Coordination wish you and all in your family and community a very happy and peaceful New Year. May all of us join hands to make this world a better place not just for us to for the future generation.

CCI International Collaborator in Ars

posted 2 Oct 2009 03:47 by CCI Media   [ updated 2 Oct 2009 03:56 ]

Fr. S. Servatius, International Collaborator, CCI is participating in the international retreat for priests from all over the world at Ars, France, home of St. John Vianney as part of the Year for Priests celebrations.

In a video message addressed to more than 1,200 priests from 75 countries participating in the retreat  Pope Benedict exhorted the clerics to be joyful.

The theme for the International Year for the Priest retreat is, "The joy of being a priest: Consecrated for the salvation of the world", Catholic News Agency reports.

According to Bishop Guy Bagnard of Belley-Ars, the theme expresses "the positive nature of the meeting and the happiness that priests experience" in their vocation.

"The priest, man of the divine Word and of sacred things, must be today, more than ever, a man of joy and hope," Benedict said in his video messag, ZENIT reports.

i

"To men who can no longer conceive that God is pure Love, he will always affirm that life is worth living, and that Christ gives it all its meaning because he loves men, all men."

The pope said the patron of parish priests had a "religion of joy," not a "morbid seeking of mortification, as sometimes has been believed."

In that regard, he cited one of St John Vianney's sayings: "Our happiness is too great, no, no, we will never be able to understand it."

Pope Benedict  said that it is an awareness of the priest's own weakness that opens him to intimacy with God. And it is God who "gives us strength and joy."

"The more the priest perseveres in friendship with God, the more he will continue the work of the Redeemer on earth," the Holy Father said, again referring to John Vianney. "The priest is no longer for himself, but for all."

According to an appeal from IYCS-Asia, the typhoon Ondoy that hit Philippines took many lives and properties. CCI appeals for 'Task of Peace Education' to be on top of agenda

posted 29 Aug 2009 02:15 by CCI Media   [ updated 29 Aug 2009 02:20 ]

Task of Peace Education – the Urgent Need

We, the participants representing different organizations from various countries in Asia-Pacific assembled at the CCI-Symposium on 'Peace Education for Sustainable Development' at La Salle, Petaling Jaya, Malaysia make the following declaration and appeal to all concerned to make the 'Task of Peace Education' the urgent need and a top priority in their agenda at all levels.

Declaration: We are concerned at the worst economic crisis the world is facing since 1929. Despite application of modern and cyber technology, the system has failed to bail out people from abject poverty. Instead, the economic crisis pushes people further into poverty and a state of helplessness. Terrorism is another major menace which costs heavily on the budgets of governments around the world. This affects the welfare and social security measures of the people to a great extent. Climate change and global warming is yet another crisis that we encounter. This serious threat is the result of the abuse of technology and nature by humanity. Religious fundamentalism creates tension and conflicts in many countries and between countries.

Every one looks forward to a society where there will be no want of basic necessities for the people and where every one will live a life of equality, dignity and peace. Communities around the world are working towards building a better world. CCI is one such network that works towards sustainable development.  ‘Peace Education’ is the only way by which we can achieve sustainable development. Peace education includes different concepts and approaches to different contexts which will ultimately guide humanity to its rightful state of being in a complete peace.

Appeal: We therefore appeal to the United Nations Organization, all heads of governments, civil society organizations, NGOs, youth/student organizations, worker organizations, religious as well as secular organizations and all political parties to give 'peace' the top priority in their agenda and to strive to include 'Peace Education' at all levels of individual and community life as the fundamental focus to achieve progress and integral human development.

Challenge to peace in one country affects every one globally. Cutting across national boundaries, let us not only work for a world without violence and war but also for a world without hatred, hunger, any form of prejudice or discrimination by ethnicity, gender, colour, race or religion or political affiliations or beliefs; a world without economic inequality, political and religious radicalism, acute nationalism and mindless acts of terrorism.

We firmly believe that 'Peace Education' will ultimately counteract all the mechanisms of dehumanization and will hasten the process of sustainable development. It is in this context, individual and collective human dignity could be restored besides harnessing a lasting harmony between humanity and nature. 'Task of Peace Education' therefore is the urgent need of the hour.

Remembering Cardijn on his 42nd death anniversary

posted 23 Jul 2009 23:34 by CCI Media   [ updated 20 Aug 2009 09:35 ]

24th July 2009 marks the 42nd death anniversary of Cardijn. Let us remember Cardijn who made us what we are today. Hundreds of thousands of men and women around the world have become 'agents of change' by the life and methodology promoted by this man. Still, as Cardijn would always say 'we are only at the beginning'.

Cardijn Community International therefore wants to offer the possibility for such leaders to come together through a network and to continue the commitment that we made while we were all in the Cardijn movements.

CCI rededicates itself on this day to promote Cardijn's vision, spirituality and methodology so that we leave a safer, greener and better world for our future generations.
